27 May 2017

* AFTERNOON CLASS * Intermediate Shibori with Rob Jones

Date: 27 May 2017 14:30 to 17:30
Details:

Intermediate Shibori – the Japanese art of stitched and bound resist. Learn three traditional patterns of stitched and bound resist and dye your creations in indigo to achieve a range of beautiful blues. This class will focus on using a rope core to expand the binding and stitching techniques you have learned and will give you at least three complete patterns which you can use for other projects.

This class is aimed at people who already have some experience of Shibori. so it it recommended that you have attended one of our Beginners classes (or equivalent) first before you join this class.

Fabrications is honoured to be welcoming Rob Jones to teach this class! Rob is a textile designer specialising in the ancient Japanese art of Shibori, using stitch, bound and clamped resist techniques to create intricate patterns and textures on scarves, table linens and lampshades. He selects both new and vintage textiles, sourcing beautiful old kimono silk from Japan and vintage and modern cloth from the UK for his creations, made at his studio in North London. Rob has studied at West Dean College and under Bryan Whitehead in Fujino, Japan in 2014.

What you will learn:

This workshop will focus on learning three traditional Shibori patterns.

Yanagi - "Willow pattern" - this is a Shibori binding technique that results in a pattern that looks like willow. You will learn pleating and binding around a core and can either make a traditional pattern with kumo spiderwebs or one with hitta bird binding.

Hinode - "Sunrise pattern" - this is a stitched and bound technique that results in a pattern that looks like a series of sunrises. You will learn how to bind your piece around a core to produce either a pattern with a reserved ground (all white apart from the suns) or one with the traditional binding marks.

Hanawa Shibori - Komasu - "Squares" - this is a stitched and folded form of makiage that gives repeating motifs.

Rob will bring sample pieces for you to see and other examples of what can be made with your finished Shibori pieces.

Rob will also teach you how to unpick your finished work and reveal your designs.

A pre-prepared Mayan indigo will be available for you to use to dye your pieces and you are welcome to bring along pre-prepared pieces to dye.

TIME: 2.30 - 5.30pm

PRICE:
£45

YOU WILL NEED:

Fabric will be provided that you can then use for other projects such as making cushion covers, lampshades or for cutting up to make patchwork pieces. NOTE: If you bring your own fabric it must be natural fibres, cotton or linen is ideal, and have been washed and dried in advance of the workshop to remove any finishes.

Fabrications is very happy to welcome back Tree from Stitchless TV for one of her one of a kind  classes. Tree has a brilliant YouTube chanel teaching how to make all of kinds of stylish items that any level of sewer can make. Her philosophy is to take high end catwalk looks and show us in easy, no fuss steps how we can make our own versions in our front rooms!

Tree has recently branched out into creating patterns from her designs and tutorials - hot off the press is her brilliant 'Sculptural Bucket Coat'. During the class, Tree will guide you through cutting the pattern, piecing together on the machine and the finishing touches.. Here is her video tutorial for a sneak preview, but there is nothing better than spending time with Tree live and direct, and being able to ask lots of questions and get feedback on your sewing.

All levels of sewer are welcome but being able to thread up a machine / have used a machine before is advisable.

On completion of this class participants will confidently be able to:

- Work with a paper pattern, layout & cut out your cloth pieces.

- Assemble fabric panels on the machine

- The coat is not lined and we will be using an overlooker to finish the inside seams.

- Apply a bias binding to embelish and finish a raw edge (more experienced sewers)

- Create your own stylish unlined scultural coat

TIME: 11am - 5pm

COST: £90 (includes your own paper pattern worth £15)

YOU WILL NEED: Bring your choice of fabric for making your bucket coat - you can pretty much use anything for this design (except stretch fabric or anything too fragile/that frays easily) or choose from our selection of suitable fabrics.
