Event Details

This afternoon workshop is the second half of the Moody Bright Designs embroidery workshop. Please read carefully both descriptions to understand the difference between the two. You are more than welcome to attend the afternoon class without the first class but you will explore a reduced number of stitches (which were taught in the morning class) and focus on ways to mend hole(s), tears, cover stains or renew garments using hand embroidery techniques.

Milou Stella set up Moody Bright Designs – a project that focuses on hand embroidered customisation of second-hand itemsAs a trained painter (Slade school of art), she plays with contrast, colour and texture. She began  “Moody Bright Designs” as a response to concerns about fast fashion and the environment, with an urgent need to slow down and appreciate the process of making something unique and of quality, whilst avoiding waste as much as possible.

In this class we’ll look into different design ideas for clothes, from floral to abstract to an intro about embroidering text. We’ll tackle important trouble shooting issues that come with garments that are ‘already-made’ (think sleeves and/or lined garments for example). You’ll be able to use all of the stitches learnt in the morning based on your preference.

Everyone is taught how to transfer designs onto fabric using the tissue paper transfer method, which is a versatile and inexpensive way to transfer any motif. You will also be provided with a zero waste folk inspired design kit, with traditional florals ready to use on your garment or to take home if you come up with a design of your own.

Each attendee will have 1:1 advice before starting your own project on your garment and you will have at least 2 hours of independent work. This is a creative workshop where both independent thinking and personal taste are encouraged and supported. However, you’ll be advised and guided through your project and you will receive advice both through written material and demonstration in class.

Because you’ll be bringing your own garment to work with, it’s vital that this item is made from a stable fabric, such cotton and linen. Jersey or knitwear can be brought in too, as we do talk about stabilisers during the afternoon. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to contact us. (Netting, organza, see-through fabrics, wool, lycra and nylon will be turned down. Sorry!)

On completion of the class participants will confidently be able to:

– Understand how to transfer a design onto clothing or cloth

– Creatively explore a range of hand embroidery stitches

– Design your own or use existing designs for hand embroidery

– Feel inspired to apply the same technique to your own projects

– Pick up some ‘insider’ tips, tricks and approaches from a practicing artist.
