The blues musician, film-maker, and multimedia artist Peter Gibson called himself a ‘Creativist’ to celebrate the boundary-busting nature of his work. Amongst his most striking creations are the heavily decorated denim jackets he called ‘Artwear’ which he first began hand embroidering as wearable tributes to musical heroes, gifts to family and professional commissions. A large selection of these amazing jackets will be featured at the ‘Creativist’ exhibition running from April 7th-13th in The Art Pavilion Mile End.
We will be using these as an inspirational starting point for this creative ‘hands-on’ arts workshop session.
In these two-hour sessions you will:
- Receive a short guided tour of the ‘Artwear’ collection
- Discover some of the messages and stories behind the jackets
- Be inspired by the motifs and imagery in the collection
- Design your own denim sampler
- Discover Peter’s ‘one-stitch’ method of space filling designs
- Explore how to work with colour in your designs
- Create and take away your sampler of appliqué and embroidery.
Level and experience:
No previous experience of sewing or embroidery is needed, but an interest in drawing, collage, sewing or design and an appetite for experiment will be an advantage. This is a small and friendly session in a very stimulating visual environment, delivered by two excellent tutors.
About the tutors:
Barley Massey is a textile artist, professional educator and caretaker of ‘Fabrications’ in Broadway Market, Hackney. She hosted Peter Gibson’s ‘Artwear’ exhibition and related events.
Hanelle Levine is a fine artist, professional educator and psychotherapist. She was also for many years studio manager and wife to the late Peter Gibson.
Bookings:
Tickets are £20 plus an additional Eventbrite booking fee. All materials will be provided free of charge. Please bring a small sketchbook and something to write and draw with in case you want to make notes. Photography of your work in progress and of the ‘Artwear’ jackets in the exhibition is welcomed.
Tea and coffee are provided throughout the art session.
