Event Details

Shibori is the Japanese art of stitched and bound resist. It is a slow craft, often requiring many hours of binding, stitching and pulling up of threads, followed by multiple dyeing processes. This and the variations in tension and pressure applied in construction mean that every piece produced is unique. Learn the traditional methods of this beautiful series of techniques and how to dye your creations in indigo to achieve a range of beautiful blues.
You will be taught a number of traditional Japanese patterns, which can be modified to suit your own design. How to dye with indigo using a pre prepared vat as well as how to unpick your finished work to reveal your designs!
Fabrications is honoured to be welcoming Rob Jones to teach this class! Rob is a textile designer specialising in the ancient Japanese art of Shibori, using stitch, bound and clamped resist techniques to create intricate patterns and textures on scarves, table linens and lampshades. Event Details

Sashiko, meaning ‘little stab’ is the Japanese art of stitching beautiful patterns using running stitch. Often used to add strength, texture and warmth to old garments, Sashiko has become synonymous with complex repeating patterns and precise stitching. Although most people will be familiar with the traditional white stitches on indigo fabric, sashiko thread actually comes in many shades, allowing for a wonderful variety of colourful designs.
Your tutor is Rob Jones, a textiles designer who takes his inspiration from Japanese textiles disciplines including sashiko, boro, shibori and katagami stenciling. Rob works with indigo and a selection of natural plant dyes and works out of a studio under an old railway arch in Hackney. He regularly teaches Shibori and indigo dyeing at Fabrications.
In this class you will learn:
– How to mark up your patterns on fabric using a variety of pens and templates
– How to stitch neatly and precisely, Sashiko is all about even stitching!
– The rights and wrongs turning corners, crossing lines and intersections
– Starting and finishing a row of stitch allowing room for stretching and washing
– How to make a hatamusubi (loom knot) to maximize the use of your thread
You will stitch an indigo dyed handkerchief as a project using sashiko threads in a colour and pattern of your choosing. These materials are provided but students can bring a piece of your own fabric to work on if you prefer.
Rob will bring examples of his work as well as a number of reference books for inspiration to continue your practice at home.
In the afternoon Rob will teach “Boro” – the Japanese art of mending using Sashiko stitching. A discount is offered when you book the full day!
TIME: 11am – 1:30pm
Class Size: Now reduced to 4 participants to ensure social distancing.
You will be provided with an indigo dyed sample cloth or a tote bag as a project using sashiko threads in a colour and pattern of your choosing. Students can bring a piece of your own fabric to work on if you prefer.
PRICE: £95 (Full Day – Sashiko & Boro) or £50

Event Details

Boro (more accurately ‘Boro boro’), meaning ‘rags or tatters’ is the art of repairing fabric using scraps and stitching. A source of shame in Japan for many years, the fabrics are now highly prized and can fetch significant sums. Boro work follows the British wartime tradition of ‘make do and mend’ but was used out of necessity in Japan to prolong the life of clothes and bedding due to extreme poverty and the scarcity of textiles.
Rob regularly teaches Shibori and Indigo dyeing at Fabrications.
In this class you will learn:
– The history and origins of Boro
– How to repair a garment using scraps, both modern and vintage
– How to use sashiko stitching to enhance your work
– Practice using visible repair to enhance and strengthen textiles
It is recommended that students bring an item of clothing you wish to repair although fabric and threads are provided should you wish to just practice or start on a piece of your very own boro.
Rob will bring examples of their work as well as a number of reference books should anyone wish to continue their practice at home.
If you attended the morning ‘Sashiko’ stitching session, you will be able to explore this in conjunction with the ‘Boro’ mending. A discount is offered when you book the full day!
Class Size: Now reduced to 4 participants to ensure social distancing.
TIME: 2:30 – 5pm
Please Bring: An item of clothing you wish to repair although fabric and threads are provided should you wish to just practice or start on a piece of your very own boro.
Includes all other materials
Packs of indigo dyed shibori and vintage textiles will also be available to purchase on the day in addition to the class should you wish to continue your practice at home.

Event Details
Kogin embroidery is a type of Sashiko, originating in the Northern part of Japan, in Aomori prefecture and is a type of counted thread work. It is stitched on a open weave fabric traditionally with white stitches against a dark background (meant to resemble snow on the ground). It works beautifully in colour too! It is stitched from side to side typically over an uneven number of threads with stitch sizes of one, three or five in length to make up geometric, symmetrical patterns.
The name “Kogin” derives from the Japanese word “koginu”, “ko” being “small” and ginu meaning “wear”, the name of a long Japanese jacket, which was often decorated with this technique.
In this class you will learn:
• How to form the three basic length stitches and count threads
• Where to start and how to neatly tidy your starting and ending threads on the back of your piece
• The rights and wrongs turning corners, crossing lines and intersections
• Starting with a number of small patterns to get used to the stitching you will then work on a larger, more involved pattern using a template provided
• Information will be provided about how to make your own designs
The tutor will bring examples of their work as well as a number of reference books should anyone wish to continue their practice at home.

Traditional Shibori – the Japanese art of stitched and bound resist. Learn two traditional patterns of stitched and bound resist and dye your creations in indigo to achieve a range of beautiful blues. This class will focus on using a rope core to expand the binding and stitching techniques you have learned and will give you at least two complete patterns which you can use for other projects.
This class is aimed at people who already have some experience of Shibori. so it it recommended that you have attended one of the Beginners classes first before you join this class.
Fabrications is honoured to be welcoming Rob Jones to teach this class! Rob is a textile designer specialising in the ancient Japanese art of Shibori, using stitch, bound and clamped resist techniques to create intricate patterns and textures on scarves, table linens and lampshades. He selects both new and vintage textiles, sourcing beautiful old kimono silk from Japan and vintage and modern cloth from the UK for his creations, made at his studio in North London. Rob has studied at West Dean College and under Bryan Whitehead in Fujino, Japan in 2014.
What you will learn:
This workshop will focus on learning two traditional Shibori patterns:
Yanagi – “Willow pattern” – this is a Shibori binding technique that results in a pattern that looks like willow. You will learn pleating and binding around a core and can either make a traditional pattern with kumo spiderwebs or one with hitta bird binding.
Hinode – “Sunrise pattern” – this is a stitched and bound technique that results in a pattern that looks like a series of sunrises. You will learn how to bind your piece around a core to produce either a pattern with a reserved ground (all white apart from the suns) or one with the traditional binding marks.
Rob will bring sample pieces for you to see and other examples of what can be made with your finished Shibori pieces.
Rob will also teach you how to unpick your finished work and reveal your designs.
A pre-prepared Mayan indigo will be available for you to use to dye your pieces and you are welcome to bring along pre-prepared pieces to dye.
Class Size: Now reduced to 4 participants to ensure social distancing.
TIME: 2:30 – 5:30pm
PRICE: £95 (Full Day – Beginners & Traditional Shibori) or £55
HOW TO BOOK: Contact us directly on 020 7275 8043 or BOOK ONLINE
PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN RUBBER GLOVES (WASHING UP STYLE)
All materials included. We will provide shirts to protect from dye but please do not wear your favourite clothes!
