As part of the London Design Festival, Barley Massey was invited by Skandium to dress around 80 iconic Iittala products with knitting. She did this along with friends from Hackney’s knitting group ‘Knitty Gritty’. They had a lot of fun devising different cosies and covers for items such as glass birds by Olva Toikka, Kivis by Heikki Orvola and the biggest challenge was a curvaseous jacket for Alvar Aalto’s vases. To highlight Iittala’s ethos of ‘lasting design against throwayism’ salvaged yarns and reused materials were used. The various Iitalla products with their knitted coverings were installed in Skandium’s windows on Brompton Road and Marlybone High Street for the duration of the festival. Alongside the window displays, Barley also created Knit-Wit-Kits which were ciculated around various locations of the festival and hosted a complimentary knitting class at Skandium.
