* MORNING CLASS * Improvers Sewing (& create a zipped 'utiliity roll')

The ‘Improvers Sewing' class is designed to help participants make more of a sewing machine, enhance basic sewing machine skills and is a natural a follow on class to our 'Provisional Driving' or for those who already have some basic sewing machine skills but would like to progress further. 

Through this class you will develop the confidence in inserting zips, making buttonholes and adding bias binding whilst creating your own stylish 'Utility Roll' (great keep tidy case for your sewing notions, brushes, make up etc) designed by your teacher Barley Massey.

The skills covered in this morning session will then be put into practise in the afternoon's class to create a simple garment fitted to your body -  'Make a simple & stylish skirt or shorts'


On completion of this class participants will confidently be able to:

- Understand how to use different accessories that accompany domestic sewing machines, such as zipper, buttonhole feet.

- Stitch different sizes and styles of buttonholes.

- Attach zips in a variety of ways.

- Apply a bias binding to embelish and finish a raw edge.

- Create your own stylish 'Utility Roll' (suitable for your sewing notions, make up, pencils/brushes etc)


TIME: 11 - 1.30pm

PRICE: £30 / £25 conc. Includes materials and refreshments.

OR if you book for the FULL DAY £50 / £45 (Morning: 'Making the most of your sewing machine. Lunch Break put everything you've learnt in the morning into practise in the afternoon class: 'Make a simple & stylish gathered skirt or shorts)

* AFTERNOON CLASS * Make your own simple & stylish skirt or shorts

If you have attended the morning class 'Improvers Sewing', this session will put everything that you've learnt into practise and you will also leave with a unique made to measure skirt or pair of shorts. There is an upcycled option of creating a skirt from a man's shirt or you can bring your own fabric. Barley Massey will be guiding you through the process and has devised a few different designs to inspire your creative skirt making.

If you just want to attend the afternoon class only and inorder to realisticaly complete the garment in the allocated time frame, you will need to have basic sewing machine skills and have an understanding of how to sew seams, put a zip in, create a button hole and add a bias binding. Barley will of course support you through the making process from measuring your body, using a pattern, cutting out pattern pieces, assembling and finishing.

On completion of the class, participants will confidently be able to:

- Take measurements of your body to adapt the pattern and ensure the garment will fit you properly
- Understand best way to use fabric or shirts economically and understand direction of the fabric grain
- Use 'gathering stitch' to create shaping
- Assemble flat fabric panels on the sewing machine to create a 3d form
- Insert a zip
- Create a waistband with button hole and neatly attach onto the skirt / shorts
- Attach a bias binding to finish the bottom edge of the skirt (or a double-overed hem if you prefer a simpler look)
- Use hand sewing for finishing (such as putting on a button)
- Get into the art of 'Upcycling'

2.30 - 5pm

£30 / £25 includes use of machines, threads, zips, buttons, pattern paper. We also have shirts you can use for the upcycled option but you are welcome to bring along your own for the personal touch!

£50 / £40 if you attend the FULL DAY (Morning: 'Improvers Sewing' Lunch Break followed by afternoon session 'Make your own simple & stylish skirt')

A classic man's shirt (XL) OR 1 - 2m fabric of your choice depending on length you want. We now sell a selection of suitable fabrics for the class at Fabrications shop

Sew your own 'Sculpural Bucket Coat' with Tree from Stitchless TV

Fabrications is very happy to welcome back Tree from Stitchless TV for one of her one of a kind  classes. Tree has a brilliant YouTube chanel teaching how to make all of kinds of stylish items that any level of sewer can make. Her philosophy is to take high end catwalk looks and show us in easy, no fuss steps how we can make our own versions in our front rooms!

Tree has recently branched out into creating patterns from her designs and tutorials - hot off the press is her brilliant 'Sculptural Bucket Coat'. During the class, Tree will guide you through cutting the pattern, piecing together on the machine and the finishing touches.. Here is her video tutorial for a sneak preview, but there is nothing better than spending time with Tree live and direct, and being able to ask lots of questions and get feedback on your sewing.


All levels of sewer are welcome but being able to thread up a machine / have used a machine before is advisable.



On completion of this class participants will confidently be able to:

- Work with a paper pattern, layout & cut out your cloth pieces.

- Assemble fabric panels on the machine

- The coat is not lined and we will be using an overlooker to finish the inside seams.

- Apply a bias binding to embelish and finish a raw edge (more experienced sewers)

- Create your own stylish unlined scultural coat

TIME: 11am - 5pm

COST: £90 (includes your own paper pattern worth £15)

YOU WILL NEED: Bring your choice of fabric for making your bucket coat - you can pretty much use anything for this design (except stretch fabric or anything too fragile/that frays easily) or choose from our selection of suitable fabrics.
