26 February 2017

* MORNING CLASS * Introduction to garment repairs & alterations

Date: 26 February 2017 11:00 to 13:30

The 'Introduction to garment repairs & alterations' has been developed for those fairly new to using a sewing machine and hand sewing techniques and is a good foundation class before working directly on your own clothing, which takes place in afternoon class 'Refresh your Wardrobe'.
If you have never used a sewing machine before, we recommend attending our 'Provisional Driving' - introduction to using a sewing machine class.

The class will consist of a series of hands on excersises and demonstrations by Barley, giving you the basic practical understanding in how to tackle simple sewing alterations, repairs and 'upcycling'. There will also be a collection of transformed garments to inspire and inform.
The session is taught by 'Fabrications' Barley Massey who will share a variety of techniques, tips and tricks she picked up during her 15 years of working freelance in wardrobe for Film and TV and through her own textile upcycling practise of over 20 years.

On completion of the class participants will confidently be able to:
- Prepare a garment for modifying from trying on, measuring, pinning and best approach for sewing
- Understand how to take seams in or out
- Know how to lift or extend a hem.
- Apply darts, pleats, gathering and elasticating to reduce volume and shape to your body
- Use useful hand stitches such as invisible / slip stitch, back stitch and button hole stitch
- Apply different ideas and techniques to patch holes in garments ( subtle or also as a means to embellish / enhance)
- Darn holes in woollens
- Look at old clothes in a whole new way!

11 - 1.30pm

PRICE: £30 / £25 Concessions or £50 / £45 when booking for the FULL DAY (Introduction to Alterations - Lunch Break - Refresh your Wardrobe) Includes additional materials and refreshments.

Suggested follow on class:

- Refresh your Wardrobe

* AFTERNOON CLASS * Refresh your Wardrobe

Date: 26 February 2017 14:30 to 17:00

This class offers an opportunity to go through your wardrobe and drawers and find items that you might not be wearing because a fixing is broken, or a hem needs lifting, perhaps your body shape has changed or you've bought a vintage item or picked up a charity shop fnd that needs to be modified or maybe something just needs to be revamped and embellished to give it a new lease of life!

During the session Barley Massey will provide tailored support and advise on ways to repair, alter or revamp some of your own clothes or second hand finds. You should be able to complete 1 - 3 garments, but you are welcome to bring in additional garments to get advice on.

Basic sewing skills (hand and machine) required to make the most of the session.
If you are new to sewing and don't feel ready to embark on working on garments directly, we recommend booking in for the whole day and participating in the morning session "Introduction to garment repairs & alterations"

The types of projects you could undertake during the session:

- Re tailore items to get a better fit
- Reduce or extend the length of a garment
- Patch or darn holes in clothes & woollens
- Replace a broken zip
- Refashion a dated item
- Embellish with applique, embroidery, lace, braiding etc
- Give a garment a creative make over or upcycle into a whole new garment or accesory.

TIME: 2.30 - 5pm

PRICE: £30 / £25 Concessions or £50 / £45 when booking for the whole day (Introduction to garment alterations - Lunch Break - Refresh your Wardrobe) Includes additional materials and refreshments.

Sew your own 'Sculpural Bucket Coat' with Tree from Stitchless TV

Date: 4 February 2018 11:00 to 04 February 2016 17:00

Fabrications is very happy to welcome back Tree from Stitchless TV for one of her one of a kind  classes. Tree has a brilliant YouTube chanel teaching how to make all of kinds of stylish items that any level of sewer can make. Her philosophy is to take high end catwalk looks and show us in easy, no fuss steps how we can make our own versions in our front rooms!

Tree has recently branched out into creating patterns from her designs and tutorials - hot off the press is her brilliant 'Sculptural Bucket Coat'. During the class, Tree will guide you through cutting the pattern, piecing together on the machine and the finishing touches.. Here is her video tutorial for a sneak preview, but there is nothing better than spending time with Tree live and direct, and being able to ask lots of questions and get feedback on your sewing.

All levels of sewer are welcome but being able to thread up a machine / have used a machine before is advisable.

On completion of this class participants will confidently be able to:

- Work with a paper pattern, layout & cut out your cloth pieces.

- Assemble fabric panels on the machine

- The coat is not lined and we will be using an overlooker to finish the inside seams.

- Apply a bias binding to embelish and finish a raw edge (more experienced sewers)

- Create your own stylish unlined scultural coat

TIME: 11am - 5pm

COST: £90 (includes your own paper pattern worth £15)

YOU WILL NEED: Bring your choice of fabric for making your bucket coat - you can pretty much use anything for this design (except stretch fabric or anything too fragile/that frays easily) or choose from our selection of suitable fabrics.
150cm: 2m 65cm
115cm: 4m
