* EVE CLASS * Shiborify your clothes with Rob Jones

Date: 2 February 2017 18:30 to 21:00

Come and learn Shibori, the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing using indigo, the most magical blue in the world. Learn the basic binding and stitched techniques and then design your own pattern before dyeing an item of clothing in the indigo vat. You’ll walk away not only with your own unique piece of fashion but with the skills to dye other pieces at home.

Fabrications is honoured to be welcoming Rob Jones to teach this class! Rob is a textile designer specialising in the ancient Japanese art of Shibori, using stitch, bound and clamped resist techniques to create intricate patterns and textures on scarves, table linens and lampshades. He selects both new and vintage textiles, sourcing beautiful old kimono silk from Japan and vintage and modern cloth from the UK for his creations, made at his studio in North London. Rob has studied at West Dean College and under Bryan Whitehead in Fujino, Japan in 2014.

On completion of the class participants will confidently be able to:

– Use a basic kamosage knot used to secure all bound work

– Create  the kumo (spiderweb) and tesugi (stripes) patterns using binding

– Understand the three basic stitches – running stitch, ori nui (teeth) and maki nui (chevrons)

– Know how to create filled shapes (maki-age) using stitching and binding

– Understand how to dye your fabrics in a genuine indigo vat made from Mayan indigo

Instructions on how to create and maintain your own indigo vat at home will be provided.

Rob will bring a selection of clothes that have been Shiborified for inspiration and will explain the various techniques used to get the effects shown.

Suitable for complete beginners.

6.30 - 9pm

£40 or £70 when booking the 2 SESSIONS

Thursday 2nd February, 6.30 - 9pm: Shiborify your clothes
Thursday 16th February, 6.30 - 9pm: Intermediate Shibori

This class is about customizing your clothes so you must bring an item of clothing that you want to dye with you

NOTE: Your item to dye must have been washed and dried. Otherwise the indigo dye may not take. Synthetic fibres cannot be dyed with indigo so please only bring natural fibres such as cotton, linen or silk. Mixed fibres can be dyed and can produce interesting effects!

Please note that your finished piece will still be wet when you leave the workshop and will need to be washed separately at home to remove any remaining indigo. Once washed indigo dyed pieces are completely colour fast and can be washed safely in the washing machine in any coloured wash.

IMPORTANT: Please bring an apron or wear old clothes. Indigo splashes stain fabric!

All other materials and tools are provided.
