Beginners Shibori 2 (Itajime)
May 7 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm£50
Shibori is the Japanese art of stitched and bound resist. It is a slow craft, often requring many hours of binding, stitching and pulling up of threads, followed by multiple dyeing processes. This and the variations in tension and preassure applied in construction mean that every piece produced is unique.
learn the traditional methods of this beautiful series of techniques and how to dye your creations in indigo to achieve a range of beautiful blues. You will be taught a number of traditional Japanese patterns, which can be modified to suit your own design. How to dye with indigo using a pre prepared vat as well as how to unpick your finished work to reveal your designs!
This session expands the range of Shibori techniques from the Beginners Shibori class, but can be attended as a stand alone class. It focuses on folding and clamping resist techniques, known as Itajime
This workshop will teach the three basic folding techniques for preparing fabric for clamp resist dying, known as ‘Kikko’ – equilateral triangles, right angle triangles and squares. These can be varied to achieve different effects.
Fabrications is honoured to be welcoming Rob Jones to teach this class! Rob is a textile designer specialising in the ancient Japanese art of Shibori, using stitch, bound and clamped resist techniques to create intricate patterns and textures on scarves, table linens and lampshades. He selects both new and vintage textiles, sourcing beautiful old kimono silk from Japan and vintage and modern clothes from the UK for his creations, made at his studio in North London. Rob has studied at West Dean College and under Bryan Whitehead in Fujino, Japan in 2014.
On completion of the class participants will confidently be able to:
– Use different binding, stitching, free clamping and board clamping techniques for resist dyeing
– How to use different clamps on the same piece to achieve different effects
– Recreate the ‘Sekka’ (snowflake) Japanese design
– Set up an indigo dye bath and how to get different shades of this lovely blue (indigo is a natural dye)
– Unpick your finished work to reveal your designs
The class is aimed at beginners but any and all levels are welcome!
YOU WILL NEED: Bring along some small textile articles to upcycle, eg napkins, t-towel, t-shirt, pillow case or ‘fat quarters’ ( NB: fabrics must be natural fibres, cotton or linen are ideal and must have been washed and dried in advance of the workshop. The fabrics can have a slight print on, which will get over dyed)
There will also be some fabric you can use to sample with if you don’t have anything of your own you’d like to Shibori!
PRICE: £45 or £80 (when booking both Tuesday sessions)
You can also book directly with us at the shop or over the phone (and save on the online booking fee)
Please Note: The workshop will take place in the Fabrications studio (which is downstairs from the shop via 12 steps)
